Chevy was smart with the volt, brilliantly smart

Unlike the new Nissan electric car, which dies when the batteries run out, the Chevy Volt has a gasoline engine that turns on when the batteries run out and thus you can drive the car forever without recharging it.

The problem with this, obviously, is that no one is going to bother charging the car. Sure, I can get 40 miles of non-gasoline driving if I charge it for 8 hours but who the heck is going to actually do that?

What's hilarious is this sort of driving will use more fuel than if they just made a normal car! The Volt's drivetrain only runs on electricity. The gasoline engine is actually a generator that converts gasoline energy into electric energy which drives the car, but this is less efficient than just having gasoline energy directly drive the car.

So . . . I can buy one, never charge it and drive it like a normal gasoline car, using MORE fuel than a normal car, yet also impress green energy douchebags who think I'm helping the environment. This is absolutely hilarious and brilliant. If Chevy wanted to be really funny about this, they would put a gas guzzling version that delivers 300HP.

Pure genius Chevy. Pure genius.

This thread will be ignored because the hippie liberals who dominate this board don't want to hear it.

Not sure if either your post or se's are correct about the analysis. I'm skeptical people will purchase the Volt. If they do, they're likely hoping for the gas savings. When those savings fall short, then they'll bitch about it.

The problem associated with the Volt being used as a gas guzzler yet enabling the PC image is that such a PC image boost would only happen in the major hippie districts. Do you really think the crazy fucking hippies there would not bitch about the Volt being a fake hippie-mobile.

As an aside, the electric cars are bullshit when it comes to saving the environment. Roughly 50% of the US electricity comes from coal, followed by ~20% nuclear power, then 17% natural gas. Only about 10% comes from renewable sources. Thus, electric cars merely pollute the environment primarily through alternative means than oil. Foreign dependence on oil is the best argument for electric cars. Saving the environment is just bullshit.

If you charge it for 8 hours every night and only drive the 40 miles you get per charge, then the gas powered engine will never come on and you'll never need to buy gas. I just don't think people are going to go to the trouble of doing that. But no one will know whether you've been charging it or buying gasoline.

I don't think plugging something in to save $50/week is "trouble" for most people.

And engine noise will make it pretty obvious whether a Volt is running on gas or electricity.

nope. reviews have shown that you can't tell when the generator comes on e.g.

you're a dumbass. even assuming they drive the maximum 40 miles a each day for five days each week, and $3/gallon gas, and that electricity is free, then the only way your numbers work is if the car gets 12 mpg which is something you only see in V12 ferraris.
