I just learned that Dwight Schrute from the office is Bahai, a religion of about 5 million people. It got me thinking, why do people join these tiny fringe religions like bahai, mormon, jew . . . Why would you add more difficulty to your life when it's so easy to join a big religion?

wtf, why wouldn't someone want to be jewish?

all else being equal, why would you want to be in a group of a few million instead of being in a group of a few billion?

There are a billion Indians and a huge chunk of them live in poverty; ditto the Chinese, despite having a nat'l GDP 4x that of India's. Consider also the ~1 billion muslims globally and the QOL of non-sheiks in the middle east. Get your Aristotelian "something of a greater quantity is better" bullshit out of here.

first of all you're a poor. second, what does any of that have to do with my question? i said, all else being equal, why would you want to be in a group of a few million when you could be in a group of billions?

Why would you join a religion based on how many members it has?

Why wouldn't you, all else being equal?

because most people are usually wrong

So the 99.99% who follow major religions are wrong, but the tiny minority who follow fringe religions like bahai/jew/mormon are right?

No, they are all wrong.

This is like asking "Why would someone want to attend a small, exclusive university when they could attend a huge public university?" or "Why would someone want a Mercedes when they could have a Chevy?"

Popularity is not positively correlated with quality. Islam and Catholicism are widely considered TTT and they're 2 of the world's largest religious. Issues include excluding women from the clergy, homophobia, sexual abuse, low quality "teachings", being on the wrong side of history many times, etc.

Robin's point about nations holds true as well. Would you rather be the average Indonesian/Indian or the average Swiss/Austrian?

Tough choices for you, I suppose.

Crazy pentecostal bullshit is overtaking catholicism in latin america, to my chagrin. There's a lot wrong with Catholicism, but I can appreciate the complexity of its inner workings, structure and mechanisms, even if they have much more to do with control over the masses than any kind of religious belief. In fact, I respect the Catholic church more because of that.

What part of "all else being equal" do you two not understand? Wait, do you think that joining a fringe religion is going to make it easier for you to gain success somehow? That's ridiculous as the opposite is obviously true. Whatever else you do, your being in a fringe religion as opposed to the popular one will certainly create some degree of prejudice against you and hold you back.

Actually, who on here is mormon or jewish? and why? do you really think 99.99% of the world is wrong and you're right?

Isn't mormonism the fastest growing religion? All religions have to start somewhere. Christianity wasn't always so large. Jews greatly outnumbered Xtians at one point.

any links to religion growth rates?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d5/LDSGrowth.png

The religion growth rates don't break Christianity down into its subcomponents. However, wiki has LSD membership growing at 2.52%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints_membership_history

Islam growing at 2.13%, Baha'i Faith at 2.28%, Zoroastrianism at 2.65%. These are the top 3. http://fastestgrowingreligion.com/numbers.html

LSD is about the same size as the Jews in total numbers. LSD = 2x Baha'i Faith members and 5x Zoroastrianism members.

You don't think it's funny to read about a guy joining bahai, then quitting it, and then commenting that his quitting was justified partly because the arabic letters spell "evil" when viewed as english letters?
