Overrun implies that some sort of shift took place...not sure thats accurate. The era of Wise men was exposed under Nixon.

It depends on geography. In some parts of the country, the stupids are marginalized or "penned in" to communities at the periphery of the metropolitan areas, whereas in other regions the proles have the run of the barnyard.

This is a good point, but it's a shifting target. A lot of proles were living in the Poconos at the Zenith of NYC's credit bubble, but it seems that people are edging in closer to the city now.

I'm just ruminating on moving from a part of the country where there's a substantial population of portly, heavily tattooed people clad in camouflage to an area of portly, heavily tattooed people clad in wife beaters. Not that I have significant interactions with either population, but still.

How did you get so geographically pwned?

I can scarcely believe we're witnessing a CCN grad in this situation.

It's a litany of cool opportunities that I'm really excited about pursuing. Like anything, though, my decisions have externalities.

You have, of course, heard that not getting Biglaw right off the bat means you probably will never be in a big firm, right? And that if you leave law altogether, you're highly unlikely to return?

Not that these are bad things. I just think it would be hard to swallow--perhaps the economy would make it easier. I graduated at the end of the bubble and did not face these decisions. I probably would've followed my brother to dental school and been raking in the cash right now, while having a day a week to go boating or play tennis. I don't think I could stomach small law/small market. Having a CCN degree would make it that much harder and humiliating.

I understand that biglaw, defined as V100 and most of the NLJ250, is foreclosed to me at this point. I'm not leaving law, either, though that might have been on the table if my options were in the order of, say, insurance defense - no room for growth, no challenging issues, no partnership prospects, etc.

Hindsight's 20/20. I know the bootstraps meme is annoying, and inapplicable due to the unique economic situation were in, but it's unproductive to think about things that could have been done differently. Most of my classmates need to stop whining, however legitimate their grievances, do a SWOT analysis, figure out what they should do moving forward, and execute. Execution is the tricky, nebulous part, but it can be done. For a lot of people, it's easier to wallow in pity.

This is credited, but you're not necessarily cut out of biglaw. You might not get to be an associate bitch in biglaw, but if you build a successful practice in a niche area, you can certainly work your way into a prestigious firm. I know quite a few people that did it.

Depends on the practice area...

Needless to say, I'm not counting on it. I'm sure it happens, though.

It's definitely much easier from a niche practice that is very technical.

LOL

Discuss.
