I like this idea of keeping track of our weekly mileage. I normally write down my time/mileage in my planner.

I was thinking that we could have a root post for each week and then each poster could just add / edit their data in a single post under that. Might keep the size more manageable. Just an idea - we can see how it works.

Better yet, each poster should have a root post, and they update their own weekly shit.

Short-term, my goal is just to go to the gym 3-4 times a week and stay for an hour each time. So far I've been trying out the other cardio equipment when I can't run on the treadmill anymore.

Longer-term, my goal is to be able to run 5 miles by the time it's warm enough to run outside--probably 3 months from now.

It's good not to time yourself for quite some time, and make short-term and long-term realistic goals. I find that too many people make unrealistic goals (such as shooting for times), become extremely discouraged, and give up. I think your goals sound realistic, which is great.

1/19: 5 in 38:04. Much better run tonight. 7.8 until last .5 when I started bumping it up. The new apt's gym has 3 TMs and there are often other runners - that's a huge motivator.

It's been cold where I'm at for quite a while, so I've been running on a treadmill. Running outside, I'll either run at a park with a measured 1 mile track, or run a route I've driven and measured with my car's odometer.

I'd really like this GPS watch that calculates time, distance, and pace. May pick one up later this Spring.

It's still a pretty big "watch" and I probably would never wear it as a time piece. However, compared to the previous generation it's tiny. Check out the size of this thing.

I'm still running and biking, but I've also recently added this to my exercise:

http://hundredpushups.com/index.html

It is a workout plan that will supposedly ramp you up to doing 100 pushups over the course of 7 weeks. I don't know that I'll be able to do it all (especially not that fast), but I'm in week 2 and have already seen some pretty quick initial results. If I only make it halfway, it will still be a dramatic improvement.

I'd like to do this - think I'll do the initial assessment later tonight. When some of the guys in my last office started doing pull ups it was amazing to see how fast improvement comes at first. I went from not being able to do even one full one to being able to do six within a couple weeks.

There is a site coming from the same crew called twentyfivepullups.com. They haven't posted it yet, but it is something I would try if the hundred pushups went well.

2 miles outdoors last night; 3 on an elliptical tonight because my legs were sore. More to come tomorrow. The goal: lose 1" off my waist and get back to my 18-year-old 30" waist.

Just started running again to get ready for a triathlon in September. I bike 5 or more times a week for at least 40 minutes each time. I'm good on long distance cycling - last summer I trained for a 200+ mile ride. I haven't run other than on a treadmill in over a year.

2 mile run w/no hills - 17 minutes 53 seconds. My quads fucking hurt. Pretty shitty time, but I was expecting worse. I'm hoping my cycle time will carry me with enough of an advantage to get a decent overall time.

Next step, start swimming. I've never really done this seriously for exercise, so this should be fun. Why did I decide to do this?

I think you and I are about on the same cycle (although you'll be faster). I'm doing a 160-mile, two-day bike ride this weekend, which is sort of the capstone ride of the season. Then I'm switching over to training for my first triathlon on May 31.

And like you, I've never swam for exercise. I know how to splash around in a pool fine, but this will be a totally new experience. If you find any good books or youtube videos or whatever that are helpful, let me know.

I'll let you know if I find anything. My goal is to keep up my current cycling schedule and probably ride a couple of centuries this summer. Get to where I can run 8 miles at a 9 minute/mile pace and work on being able to swim laps for 45 minutes without rest. I'm looking for info regarding how to train for the swim.

I'm going for an Olympic distance tri (although I may back out and go with a sprint since this is my first time), and I think next summer, I'm going to attempt to train for a half iron.

Keep me posted on what you find out about training too. Maybe we could start a different thread so as nor hijack this one too badly.

I had a friend who recently did a triathlon. He said the swim was the hardest part (and he can swim) while the bike felt like he was in cruise control. I think running is his worst area.

I can swim just fine. I've just never really done it as exercise in any serious manner. Do you think I should ditch my inflatable arm bands for the race, though?

I ran a 5K last month after not running at all for a long time and finished in 31 minutes, which was definitely better than I expected, being pathetically out of shape.

Now I've decided to run a half marathon like 3 months from now, and I've started training. I haven't been timing anything yet, though I seem to be hovering right around the 10:00/mile mark. Maybe if I track my progress on here I'll be more likely to stick with it.

So far:

6/28: 2 miles

6/30: 2 miles

7/2: 2.5 miles

7/4: 3 miles

7/5: 2 miles

Good for you man, that's a solid start towards a half. Do you have a training plan that you are working on? There are tons of them online, but the main thing to work on for each of them is your weekly long run that will get progressively closer to 13.1 before your event date. Depending on your level of fitness, you can probably increase this 1-2 miles per week. From everything I've read, a weekly base of 25-30 is good for 13.1, though you could get by with less if you just want to finish and don't care about your time as much. You absolutely need to do some 10-12 mile runs though.

Yeah, I am using a training plan that my wife found online (she's running it too). The 3 mile run that I ran on the fourth was the "long" run for the week. It increases by a mile each week, and the 2-3 mile runs get up to 4-5.

Unfortunately, I got off of the schedule this week because I was really busy and was out of town this weekend. My longer run was supposed to be yesterday, but I did it today instead.

7/8: 2 miles

7/12: 4 miles in 44 minutes--I sent myself a text when I started this time and checked the time when I got back.

I think my paced dropped off considerably about the last half mile. I felt surprisingly good for the first three miles, though, so hopefully the training is helping.
